Afghanistan Commercial Bank (ACB) has pledged to sponsor Shaheen Asmayee F.C. in this year's Roshan Afghan Premier League (RAPL). Shaheen Asmayee F.C is this year's defending champions.
The decision was welcomed by the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) and was termed as a vital step for the improvement of football and in initiating the culture of sponsorship in Afghanistan – especially for the RAPL, which is in its fourth year.
At a press conference on Monday, ACB officials said they will leave no stone unturned to support the teams in the long term.
Shaheen Asmayee F.C. – a Kabul-based team – has won the championship title two years in a row. This achievement has brought them to the attention of sponsors, said officials.
ACB is the team's second sponsor, after Karwan University sponsored them previously.
"We have witnessed good experiences by Karwan University in the sponsorship of the Shaheen Asmayee F.C. and this time we decided to support the team," said Kawun Sayiq, head of ACB marketing.
"We will try to invest in sports in order to improve this sector in Afghanistan," he added.
The technical deputy of AFF Yousuf Kargar said the improvement of footballers and holding a standard primer league needs support from the business sector and said he hopes sponsorship will become a common practice in the country.
The RAPL will kick off in the next two weeks. Shaheen Asmayee is in the first group – also known as the 'group of death'. They are expected to play Toofan Harirod, De Maiwand Atalan and Simorgh Alborz in the opening rounds.
